Real or AI?

Part 1: The Truth About “Midnight Blue” Hostas

If you’ve been on social media lately, you may have seen plants that look almost too perfect to be real.

Bright neon flowers. Electric blue leaves. Plants that look like they’re glowing.

One we’ve been getting a lot of calls about lately is the “Midnight Blue Heart Hosta.”

So let’s break it down.

Are Blue Hostas Real?

Yes — blue hostas absolutely exist.

Many varieties have beautiful blue or blue-green foliage that adds a cool tone to shaded gardens. These plants get their color from a natural waxy coating on the leaves that gives them that soft blue appearance.

Some well-known blue hostas include varieties like:

• Hosta ‘Hadspen Blue’

• Hosta ‘Blue Mouse Ears’

• Hosta sieboldiana ‘Elegans’

These are all real, well-established plants grown by reputable nurseries.

But here’s where things start to get confusing online.

When the Color Looks Too Good to Be True

Many of the images circulating online show hostas with neon blue, black-blue, or glowing colors that simply don’t exist in nature.

These images are often:

• Heavily edited

• Digitally enhanced

• AI-generated

• Or used to sell seeds that won’t grow the plant shown

Unfortunately, this type of content has become very common across social media and online marketplaces.

A Quick Tip From Our Greenhouse Team

If a plant online looks unnaturally vibrant or glowing, it’s worth doing a little research before purchasing.

Plants can absolutely have beautiful colors — but nature usually stays within a realistic range.

Extremely bright neon blues, purples, and glowing tones are almost always a sign that the image has been altered.

What Actually Happens With “Exotic” Seeds

Another common situation we see is people purchasing seeds advertised for unusual plants like:

• black hostas

• rainbow succulents

• bright blue hydrangeas

• neon pampas grass

In many cases, these seeds will either grow into a completely different plant or won’t grow at all.

It’s frustrating — and we hear about it from customers quite often.

When You’re Not Sure — Just Ask

If you ever see a plant online and aren’t sure whether it’s real or not, feel free to reach out.

Our team works with plants every day and we’re always happy to help sort fact from filter.
