Planting Trees: Your Guide to Success in Southwest Missouri

Updated: Jun 4

Planting a tree is one of the best things you can do for your yard—and for the environment. But here’s the part most people don’t realize: Planting the tree is only half the job. Watering it correctly is what keeps it alive. Every year, we see healthy, beautiful trees struggle simply because they weren’t watered properly after planting. So for Arbor Day, we want to make sure you set your tree up for success from the start.

Why Watering Matters So Much

When you plant a tree, it goes through transplant shock. Even with proper planting and support products, the root system needs time to establish in its new environment. During that time, your tree depends entirely on you for water. Without deep, consistent watering:

  • Roots dry out

  • Growth slows or stops

  • Leaves may wilt or drop

  • The tree can decline quickly

Understanding Transplant Shock

Transplant shock is a common issue for newly planted trees. It occurs when the tree is moved from one location to another. The roots are disturbed, and the tree needs time to adjust. This adjustment period can be stressful for the tree, making proper care essential.

The Most Common Mistake

The biggest mistake we see? People think rain or sprinklers are enough. They’re not. Sprinklers and light watering only soak the top layer of soil—but your tree’s root ball sits deeper. Your tree needs slow, deep watering that actually reaches the roots.

The Importance of Deep Watering

Deep watering ensures that moisture penetrates the soil far enough to reach the roots. This encourages the roots to grow deeper into the soil, which helps the tree become more resilient to drought and other stressors.

The Proper Way to Water a Tree

(The Slow Bucket Method)

This is the same method we use on our own landscape installs. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Take a standard bucket.

  2. Drill or poke small holes in the bottom.

  3. Fill the bucket with water.

  4. Place it at the base of your tree.

  5. Let it slowly drain and soak into the soil.

This allows water to:

  • Reach the full root ball

  • Soak deep into the ground

  • Avoid runoff and wasted water

Slow and steady is key.

How Often Should You Water?

Every tree is a little different depending on:

  • Size

  • Variety

  • Soil conditions

  • Weather

As a general rule:

  • Newly planted trees: 2–3 times per week

  • Hot or dry weather: may require more frequent watering

The goal is consistent moisture—not soaking wet, not completely dry.

Signs Your Tree Needs Water

Keep an eye on your tree. If you notice wilting leaves or dry soil, it’s time to water. Regular checks will help you maintain the right moisture level.

With every tree purchase, we provide a planting and watering guide specific to your tree. That way you’re not guessing—you know exactly what your tree needs. And if you prefer the bucket method, we also carry buckets here at the nursery for $6 to help make watering simple and effective.

Additional Tips for Tree Care

Mulching

Adding a layer of mulch around your tree can help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature. It also reduces competition from weeds. Just be sure to keep the mulch a few inches away from the trunk to prevent rot.

Fertilizing

Fertilizing your tree can promote healthy growth. Use a slow-release fertilizer designed for trees. Follow the instructions on the package for the best results.

Pruning

Regular pruning helps shape your tree and remove any dead or diseased branches. This encourages healthy growth and improves air circulation.
